Blog Make-over

Blog Make-over

Here are some herbs growing in my kitchen.

Ummmm…..can you say…..random.

I know.

I was going for a brilliant, witty analogy about growing and herbs and spring and blogs and make-overs.

And somewhere between taking the picture and writing the post….I got nothing.

Nothing brilliant.

Nothing witty.

Nothing even garden-related.

Nothing……except to say that the blog will be off-line this weekend while it goes all Beverly Hills and gets a facelift.

So if you stop by and there’s a construction screen…..no worries.

Just remember the herbs and know with absolute assurance……Thistlewood will be back on Monday with a total room (and blog) make-over.

See you then rock star!

I think the first time you ever met the master bedroom it looked liked this.

Now….I love this room.

But have you ever wondered what was under that rug?

You didn’t?

Oh….my bad.  Well….ummm….I have a whole page of other projects to show you.

But just in case you were curious…..wait until you see this.Continue reading

A Cookbook Chair

A Cookbook Chair

If you were on a desert island and you could only have one cookbook….which one would you bring?

I really need to know.

Well….actually….I need a lot of things.

You know….things that help you cook.

Like spices.

And pots…..and pans.

And a roaster.

Yep.

A roaster.

Oh….and I really need a colander.Continue reading

My Mayflower Table

My Mayflower Table

Vintage Table

A long time ago in a big city far, far away…..this table was the talk of the town.

It came from a yard sale.

It was painted blue and then it was painted black and then it was painted red and then I refinished the top and painted it white and distressed it.

And then time and all the little people of the house helped with the beautifully aged patina by giving it a good kick now and throwing the occasional dump truck into it.Continue reading

Easy Tip to Keep Your Ivy Healthy

Easy Tip to Keep Your Ivy Healthy

How-to-keep-ypur-ivy-healthy

Keeping an ivy alive and green and ready to take on the coat hangers of the world…. is really so simple.

Here’s the solution.

Ready?

Dish washing soap.

Here’s the proof.

Ivy Topiary Topiary

Ivy circa April 12, 2011                                                                       Ivy circa June 28, 2011

Have you seen an ivy when it gets yellow and pale and the leaves start falling off?

It’s usually because of spider mites.

I don’t remember who told me to use dish washing soap to get rid of them.

And I don’t know why it works.

But it does.

Dishwashing Detergent

The secret is cheap soap.

No fancy stuff.

No extra anti-bacterial nonsense.

Just soap.

Soap dispenser

Simply add 2 tsp. of soap to one pint of water.

Don’t add anymore soap or your topiary may not recover.

Then pour mixture into a spray bottle filled with water.

And if you do this….can you try to get a cuter spray bottle than mine?

Not just one from Wal-mart.

A really cute spray bottle.

Like this one.

Or this one.

Or at the very least make a cover for it like this.

English Ivy

Then take your really cute spray bottle and spray the leaves every two to three weeks.

That’s it.

  Topiary

Your topiary will thank you.

Your ivy will thank you.

And the spider mites will have to buy a Winnebago and take a cross-country trip to their condo in Florida :)

PS  If you want to know how to make a topiary….here’s a post where I used a coat hanger to create one!

PPS  Here’s an article on using soap that has much better directions and tells when not to use soap under certain conditions.

Painted Hutch

Painted Hutch

I bought this hutch at a yard sale for $3.00.

Ummm….yep.

That’s right….$3.00.

Can we pause just a moment and take that in…..and remember what I said about my endless hunt for the perfect yard sale?  A journey filled with Hooter’s t-shirts and broken down appliances and old florists vases.  A journey where you never know what you might find at the next yard sale…..so a true yard saler never gives up.

Never ever.

Because hope always springs eternal.
