Through the Years and The Evolution of a Porch

Through the Years and The Evolution of a Porch

the porch before

I’m pausing just a moment on this busy Monday morning with an ode to my porch:

Through the years

You’ve never let me down

You’ve turned my life around

The sweetest days I’ve found, I’ve found with you

Through the years

No one sings it like Kenny.

And this is the beginning of the porch’s journey.  The before before.  Before the black and white and Christmas trees and magnolias and neutrals.

This is where it all started.

This is where it began.

Decorating With Vintage Finds

vintage finds

Do you have any idea what this is?

You probably guessed right away when you saw it because you are smart like that.  I, on the other hand, had no idea.

I just knew I needed it.

Numbers.  Check.

Typography.  Check.

A little bit of history and rust and character and I’m sure a lifetime of stories to tell.

Check. Check and double check.Continue reading

Painting Projects

Good morning sunshine.

Top of the morning to you.

I’m in the beautiful football loving state of Alabama today working on a historic show house and DIYing it all day today.  We are building a kitchen island and making a headboard out of a door and picture frames out of molding and I’m picking out furniture and incorporating it with a selection of antiques from the original owners and measuring and dreaming and planning and decorating.

And drinking coffee.

Lots and lots of coffee.

If you want to follow along with my adventures today, you can find me on Instagram and Periscope (it’s an app for your phone and my name is @ThistlewoodFarm).Continue reading

Farmhouse Kitchen Desk

One of these days I’m going to write a stream of consciousness post.

Remember those from high school literature junior year?

The author of the piece would just write down whatever they were thinking.  It was kind of like chasing rabbits with a literary accent.  Sometimes it made sense and sometimes it didn’t.  At the time I thought it was ridiculous.

Now me and my much wiser self think it’s brilliant.Continue reading

To All the Rooms I’ve Loved Before

To All the Rooms I’ve Loved Before

monogrammed chair covers

I did it.

Sometimes I’m a big talker.

I talk and dream and hope and sigh and plan….

….and end up just watch Downton Abbey.

Not this time.  Well, of course I watched Downton Abbey….I wanted to find out what happened with Mary’s scandalous trip across Europe and what quips the Dowager Countess of Grantham would say to make me laugh out loud.  But before that I finished the big room change-up.

And today I have pictures.

Are you ready?Continue reading

Random thoughts on a cold Saturday morning.

Just add coffee.

1.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good hand cream?  I’ve tried almost everything and my hands look like I was around when Columbus discovered America.

2.  The sweetest kitten showed up on our doorstep.

Once my children saw him, he became a member of the family.

His name is Nash (as in Steve…the basketball player).

3.  I love singing “Let it Go” at the top of my lungs in the car.

Preferably with the windows rolled up. :)

4.  Don’t you think the idea of an entire Christmas tree covered in nothing but snowflakes sounds so pretty?

5.  Is it wrong if I’m hooked on the Hallmark channel?

Even if I can figure out the plot in the first five minutes.

I can’t help it.

Nothing makes me smile more than a happily ever after.Continue reading

Four Simple Tips for Decorating With Trays

Four Simple Tips for Decorating With Trays

Ideas on Decorating with Trays

Third grade was a banner year for me.

I learned how to walk my hands all the way down the brick wall on the side of the school until I ended up in a back bend.

I won the contest for walking the farthest around the edge of the playground while hula hooping.

I came in second in the school multiplication bee (total aside:  I lost on 12 x 13).

No one ate paste in our class anymore.

And I discovered how to paint-by-number.Continue reading
