A Moment Like That

A Moment Like That

house-fall-outside

If I had a dime for every baseball game I have sat through, I could buy a tropical island in the south pacific.

I’ve sat through baseball games in the rain.

And the cold.

And the sunshine.

I’ve seen runs and hits and slides into home plate and bunts and outs.

I’ve sat through games with a team in the depths of despair because they were down by 14 runs.

I’ve sat through games with a team with hit after hit, scoring runs like they were hot cakes.

And through it all, there’s one thing I’ve learned.

There’s always baseball tomorrow.Continue reading

How To Make a Linen Scrap Pillow of Your House

How To Make a Linen Scrap Pillow of Your House

Living Room Decor

I sat in this room Monday night until 10:15pm and watched the last college football game of this college football season.

It was the national championship game.

Alabama v. Clemson.

The Crimson Tide v. the Tigers.

Normally I wouldn’t be watching football.  I would be watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and wondering how Bethany from the New York Housewives showed up in Beverly Hills, but I bartered the Golden Globes telecast from my husband in exchange for watching the national championship last night.

It was a good trade.Continue reading

The Most Important Person in the County

The Most Important Person in the County

winter farmhouse n snow

Dear tired, weary, over-worked, beleaguered salt-truck worker,

I salute you.

For four months now….you have tried so hard.

Truly.

In November they told us all that the snow was on its way and you diligently salted the roads.

And not a snowflake ever came.Continue reading

Sometimes All You Need Is a Pair of Stinky Shoes

Sometimes All You Need Is a Pair of Stinky Shoes

painted-table-runner.jpg

This is the week that school started.

Finally.

Can we still be friends…..

……if I tell you I’ve been waiting for this week all summer?

Every time I picked up a pair of flip-flops off the floor or washed stacks of bowls etched with dried-on fruit loops or sorted through wet beach towels left in the back hall or swept up tiny pieces of paper scattered all over the floor or gathered up the stinky tennis shoes from every corner of the house…..

….I sighed.

And waited patiently for the days of sparkling clean floors and quiet.Continue reading

How to Create a Watercolor of Your House in Four Easy Steps

How to Create a Watercolor of Your House in Four Easy Steps

barn-in-snow

I wish I was a weatherman.

Or I wish I was married to a weatherman or had an aunt or uncle or brother or sister or a cousin-twice-removed…..

….who was a weatherman.

Seriously.

Because maybe they could explain to me in simple weatherman terms…..why the sun is shining and the skies are blue….

…..and it’s 12 degrees.

Shouldn’t all that sun warm everything up and melt the snow a little?

I mean….I’m not asking for much….just maybe a temperature with a 2 in front of it.

And why did the sun only melt the snow on the top of my car which turned into water and then slowly dripped down across the driver’s side door….

…oddly turning into ice again mid-stream.

*sigh*

And then froze the door shut.Continue reading

Stenciled Concrete Pavers

Stenciled Concrete Pavers

 Stenciled-Concrete-Pavers

Until about a month ago we were a non-jumping household.

To get from place to place….we walked everywhere.

Well…..most of the time we walked.

Sometimes we walked really fast.

Sometimes we ran.

Sometimes we skipped.

And….truthfully…..there was even the occasional slight hop.Continue reading

What To Do With a Big Blank Wall

What To Do With a Big Blank Wall

Do you have a big blank giant enormous wall in your house?

Me, too.

Actually, I think we have the biggest, blankest wall in North America.

Truly.

You might not have noticed its big blankness because it’s cleverly disguised by the giant multi-paned chalkboard that takes up almost the entire space.

But before that chalkboard…..well…..that wall would totally have shown up on Mr. Blackwell’s worst dressed list.

At the very top.

I tried everything.  I painted it khaki and I painted it gray and I hung yard sale frames and then coasters and then iron pieces ……and nothing worked.

Chalkboard Calendar project
It just looked unfocused and outdated and a little like I was trying too hard.

*sigh*

Kind of like my perm from 1994.

All ratted out with split ends and nowhere to go.

And then I saw a broken 40 pane window in the trash….and the rest is history.

So just in case you have a big blank wall……and no one has thrown away a window in your neighborhood…..I posted some creative ideas on what do with all that blank space over at the Lamp’s Plus blog today.

And can we keep the whole split-ended perm ratted up with Aqua Net thing……just between us?

I wouldn’t want the walls to talk. :)
