Comparison

Theodore Roosevelt was brilliant.

In between being president and riding with the rough riders and speaking softly and carrying a big stick….

….he said something that has stuck with me forever.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Everyone experiences it.

Everyone.

At some time in everyone’s life, we all encounter a situation where someone is smarter or funnier or richer or wittier or more stylish with better hair and a house that dirt wouldn’t show up if you paid it to.  And we all compare ourselves.  And feel smaller.

STOP.

You are amazing.

Truly.

Don’t ever forget that the you that you are is so bright and funny and witty and clever and unique and special and wonderful and shines so brightly….

….that the rest of have to wear shades. :)Continue reading

Five Tips for Taking Better Photos of a Room

Five Tips for Taking Better Photos of a Room

taking better room photos

Have you ever noticed that when you take a photograph of your space…..so many times what your eye sees….

….doesn’t always translate?

(total aside:  there’s a life lesson in there somewhere if we weren’t talking photography today).

When I first started taking pictures for the blog….I would style the room and be so all about it and think everything was perfect and grab the camera and take a picture and through the viewfinder…..

….it looked amazing.

Like Better Homes and Gardens should be knocking at the door.

But when I downloaded the photos and actually looked at the pictures….yikes….not so much.

It takes practice and learning how to think like a camera to get it right.

So 4754 pictures and hundreds of rooms later….here’s what I’ve learned from the picture-taking-school-of -hard-knocks.

Three Simple Tips For Better Photos

Fireplace_With_Baskets

Someone wise once said, “Photography takes a moment to learn and a lifetime to master.”

Truer words were never spoken.

When I started this blog I was taking pictures with a camera that you threw away.

Remember those?

And while my throw-away camera was perfect for vacation and documenting various important events and the occasional picture of the cats…..

…I realized that it wasn’t going to cut it for blogging.

So I began to teach myself with hours and hours of practice and lots of trial and error….

….specializing in the error department. :)

And after a year and a half of learning and growing and trying…..

…..I wanted to share a little of what I’ve learned and share three simple tips for better photos.Continue reading

Good morning rock star.

I hope the sun is shining where ever you are.

Spring has almost sprung and it’s another random Saturday.

Before we start.

Before I discuss all the randomness that was the week of 3-14-14.

Have you seen the new IKEA collection?

Seriously.

Coolest ever……in the history of ever.Continue reading

Thistlekeeping (and a Fun Announcement)

spring-decorations-thistlewood-tulips_thumb.jpg

I think this week was a little more random than normal.

Blame it on the sunshine and the Olympics.

Between all the fuss over the Olympic scoring with the ladies ice skating and how relieved I was that Bob Costas had finally recovered from his eye infection…..

….I got a little distracted.  :)Continue reading

Blackberry Picking

Blackberry Picking

Can you believe I took this picture?

Because I can’t.

Seriously.

I mean….it only took me about 37 blurry pictures and a lucky guess at the right ISO and aperture and shutter speed on a winding country lane in the middle of picking blackberries….

…..to get this photograph.Continue reading
