Trash to Treasure: Almost Spring Door Decorating

Trash to Treasure: Almost Spring Door Decorating

spring-decorating-ideas-front-door-idea

The other day I went looking for spring flowers to decorate the front door with.

It looked kind of empty….

….after I took the Christmas wreath off it. :)

I looked everywhere….from home improvement stores to local nursery’s.

Nothing.

Zilch.

Nada.

Nothing to decorate a spring front door with.

What were they thinking?

I mean….seriously….

….didn’t they notice that it was in the 40’s.

That’s swimsuit weather around here.

After hours of looking…..I didn’t find any fresh flowers…..

…..but I did find two of these.

They were only $5.00 and the tag said “Peach Picking Baskets.”

Have you ever seen a basket like this?

Total trash to treasure.

I have seen the apple baskets….they are low and round and I use them to decorate for fall.

But peach picking baskets?

Never.

I decided they were the foundation for my “almost spring” door.

I brought them home and placed a topiary inside and put them on the front porch on either side of the front door…..

…..and then I shopped the house for the rest.

I found an entire generation of round spheres.

Metal and wood and rustic and simple and big and small.

They had a family reunion on the almost spring front porch.

I found a random metal object and used it as a wreath.

Perfect for an almost spring door.

(total aside:  if you have a random metal object at your house and you want to use it on the front door….add those sticky circles that go on the bottom of furniture on the back to prevent scratching).

In the end with a little trash to treasure and shopping the house…..

…..the almost spring door decorating finally came together.

It’s a definite improvement from the Christmas wreath still on the door in March.

But just between us….here’s hoping that March showers…..

….bring the front door plenty of April flowers. :)

  1. Oooh those peach baskets are so pretty! Speaking of peaches, my peach trees are budding; you should have seen me and little man hopping about the yard in excitement and going from tree to tree to to check out the buds! The random metal thing on the door is GORGEOUS!

  2. Pam O'Donnell :

What did you use for the topiaries? Love the look!!

  3. I just love it all, you did a wonderful job searching the house and coming up with some beautiful things :)

  4. Only you can turn a simple Peach basket into something adorable! Your Spring front porch is fabulous! I also love your idea of shopping the house! The metal shape on your door is wonderful! Your front porch is so inviting! Love this!

  5. The only thing prettier than those peach baskets were the gorgeous peaches that use to be in them! WOW do I love what you did with those beauties! The Topiaries look totally and utterly amazing and I am in love with the entire look…the Thistlewood Look!!! : ) hugs…

  6. Wish I had a random metal object like yours!! That is gorgeous!

  7. Awesomely amazing as always! Love the peach baskets!

  8. Can I come on over and search your house for my front door inspiration ? If I looked high and low I’d probably come up with dust bunnies :-) You may have some unexpected visitors in your beautiful topiary — we had left some artificial flowers out and turtle doves decided to take up residence. Every time we came out the front door the Mr or the Mrs would scream at us. We’d jump every time because we just weren’t used to it. It’s funny to think about it now but at the time they scared the beejeeszus out of us.

    • OMG! That just made me spit my tea! I’m so sorry!!!! But that was so freaking funny because that is SOOO something that would happen to us! Thank you for sharing and making me laugh out loud Marisa!

  9. OMG I just reread what I wrote and it sounds like I’m implying that YOU have dust bunnies —NO! NO! NO! I meant if I looked through my house I would find dust bunnies. I am sooooo embarrassed. . . my face is beet red. Please forgive me . . . I think I’d better stop talking before I dig myself in deeper. :-(

  10. Random metal object indeed….that is downright gorgeous! Now tell me honestly….would a peach know if you put it in an apple basket?? I really like those peach baskets though! Have a wonderful weekend! …oh, what did you plant in the baskets? ;)

  11. Lisa~A Cottage To Me :

I have a vintage red “peach” basket. I was told it was an apple picking basket, but hey I’ll go with peach basket either way. Your looks great with the topiary!

  12. That came together perfectly!! I’m headin to visit my family this weekend and we plan on hitting a huge antiques mall while I’m there. I may come back with lots of trash to treasure ideas!

  19. I want your book also! Is that metal wreath sold somewhere or is it a random piece? Loved the pieces on your mantal yesterday also. Love your porch!

  23. Ohhh, you are either going to wish more snow and cold weather for Indiana or just shoot me:( At first glance, I thought your metal piece was a snowflake and I was thinking, why the heck is she putting a snowflake on the front door in March????? Thank heavens its Friday, 3 more hours of the work day and I’m going home to watch basketball. I do like your almost spring porch, but you know, I am more than ready for real spring!!

  24. Anna Starner :

The first thing I thought of when I saw your random metal object was a snowflake They are forecasting possibly up to a foot of snow Sunday into Monday here in central PA. Can you tell I am so tired of winter and the white stuff. We have had more than enough snow here and we keep getting teased by a nice warm day followed by more winter.

  25. So beautiful, Karianne! I’m ready for spring too! I love that door “wreath”. Sharing on my FB page today ;)
    Hugs,
    Jamie

  26. Looks great as always Karianne..Have a super weekend..

  27. I want those peach baskets!!! Great almost spring door and porch! ~~Angela

  28. I just love your “Almost Spring ” door decor! It is probably way better then anything you could find in a store anyway!

  29. Love your almost spring door….Very clever shopping…

  30. I like the metal thingy wreath! Also the beautiful color and shine of your door reminded me of how badly my front door needs painting. To do list for Spring.

  31. Karianne, I love your front porch! What awesome ideas!! Here in Georgia(at least my part, which is on the GA/SC border) the peach baskets are very common, as peach orchards prevail. We actually have a few in our shop that are painted and several in their original but aged birthday suit. My husband turned one upside down and ran an Ikea lighting kit through the little hole on the bottom and viola, he made a hanging lamp! Guess the possibilities are endless!

  32. What a pretty entry…but what I want is that metal thingy on your front door. Love your endless creativity. If you could bottle it I would buy it! Ha!
    Sheila

  33. Belinda Smith :

I love your peach-picking baskets… down here in North Florida we always called them “pea hampers”, but I think your name is so much more ~Southern Bell~. I am feeling extremely convicted about the fact that there are Christmas wreaths hanging on both the outside AND inside of my front door… as…i…type. Oh, and then there are the coffee filter snowflakes that may or may not still be hanging in my dining room… meant to replace them with hearts, but missed it and I’m not really a Shamrock kinda gal… so… may have to wait for inspiration to strike… until then I’ll just bemoan the fact that you all got real snowflakes and we’ve only had a few near misses and hacked coffee filters. BTW, I LOVE your almost spring porch… oh and everything else that has ever run through your brain!!!

  34. That is an AWESOME piece. The whole vignette is wonderful.

  35. Your front porch looks awesome! I love the rustic feel of it. And around here we say April showers bring May flowers…not much of anything but snow in March…especially this year! And we are still having sub-zero weather up here…so the fact that I still have my Christmas wreath on the front door doesn’t bother me…much.
    Debbie :)

  36. Hi KariAnne,
Love the almost Spring door, especially the metal piece hanging on the door. Those peach baskets are perfect too and doubt I will ever see those here in MI since we are long on cherries but not so much on peaches but will keep my eye out for them now.
    Hugs, Lynnie
