Is it wrong if when my husband asked me what I wanted to choose for date day….
….and I told him I wanted to paint a table.
Because if it’s wrong….I’m not sure I want to be right.
You see….I found this table in the very back of an antique store covered in dust and scratches….right next to an old phone booth and two sets of hair curlers.
It had amazing lines and three shelves and the cutest molding on the side that kind of grinned at me….
….and silently pleaded for me to take it home.
And so….on date day…..I told him about the table.
And how much I wanted to paint it.
And it would go so much faster if I had a super cute date to help me tape the other side.
And would it help….if the table and I…..
…..watched the World Cup with him later?
And so it was…..that over coffee and giggles and laughs and a painted table….
….a pair of twinkling brown eyes took me on one of the best dates ever.
Painted Table Project
SW Mindful Gray (greatest gray on the planet)
FrogTape with curves pattern
a date with twinkling brown eyes
Step 1: Paint the table white
If you are reading this before 2:00pm can you just imagine I have the best before picture of the table that goes right here in the post.
It’s a really, really good before.
I mean….seriously extra pitiful with extra spiderwebs and dust and scratches and brown.
I’m adding the picture here when I get home….but for now take my word for it….
….it was ready for a make-over.
Paint this pitiful table white.
Let it dry and cure for at least 24 hours.
Step 2: Add tape
For this project I used the FrogTape with Curves.
I simply lined up the table across the top of the table with about 1/2 inch between each of the pieces of tape.
Don’t think too hard about this.
Don’t stress that every single piece of tape is exactly the same width.
In the end if one of your curved lines is a little bigger than the other…..
….it just adds extra character.
Here’s the table mid-tape.
And here it is completely tape-ful.
Can you see why having a date is so much help?
If you can hand the tape to your date on the other side….
….it makes everything so much easier.
Then make sure all the tape is scored….as in firmly pressed down with something with a crisp edge.
Step 3: Take a super-artistic picture of the paint roller
Tell your date what you are doing.
Ask his opinion on the precise location of the paint roller for the picture.
Watch him as he seriously considers the question.
….because you already knew where the paint roller was going all along.
Step 5: Paint the table
Using the roller….paint the table with SW Mindful Gray.
Roll the paint on until you have a solid coat.
Step 6: Peel off tape
When you are finished it should look like this.
But why stop there?
This is part of the project when you tell your date to go start watching the World Cup…..
…..and that you and the table will be there shortly.
Step 7: Stamp a round stamp on every other curve
All could find in the craft room was a smiley faced stamp.
In the make-it-work department….my circles started looking like this.
And when I filled them in….
….they looked like this.
And like this.
Let the SW Mindful Gray curves and circles dry and then seal the table with a coat of water-based acrylic clear-coat.
When you are done and you add random orange accessories from the kitchen and an orange polka dotted rug….
….the table looks like this.
Finish up by fixing your date a chicken salad sandwich and a glass of sweet tea.
Then tell him how brilliant he is.
And how much he helped with the project and the styling.
And how you couldn’t have done it without him.
And that you promise next week’s date day won’t look anything like this….
…..it will be all about building a shelving unit instead.
